Jev vs Rule Engines

Rules and keyword lists are transparent and cheap until language drifts. Jev handles fuzzy natural language with typed outputs and confidence, but still needs you to define the label space and human fallbacks.

Where Jev is stronger

  • Handles paraphrase and messy free text better than brittle keywords
  • Returns calibrated confidence for soft thresholds
  • Same Choice / Score / Noul schema across many scenes

Where the other side wins

  • Perfect transparency and unit-testable exact matches
  • Zero model cost for closed vocabularies
  • Regulatory settings that forbid ML on a path

Use Jev when

  • Support tickets, UGC, and leads with natural language variation
  • You already outgrew keyword lists
  • You need confidence-aware escalate paths

Prefer the other when

  • Exact SKU / ID / regex matches
  • Hard compliance deny-lists that must never soft-allow
  • Tiny label spaces with no language ambiguity

Which should you use?

Keep hard rules for immutable denies and IDs. Use Jev for fuzzy language classification — and fail closed to rules or humans when confidence is low.

Developer deep dive

Rule engines win on explainability: if contains(“refund”) then queue=billing. They lose when users paraphrase, misspell, or mix intents. Jev vs rules is usually a layered design, not a rip-and-replace. Keep immutable denies (blocked SKUs, banned IPs, legal must-block phrases) in deterministic code. Use Jev for fuzzy language (“sounds like fraud,” “priority urgent,” “safe to auto-reply”). Always define what happens on low confidence — soft-allowing a hard compliance path is how incidents happen. Treat Jev confidence as a signal to your existing rules, not a replacement for them.

Cost and latency

Rules are $0 model cost and microsecond-fast. Jev adds model latency and prepaid token cost, which is still typically far below generative chat for the same classification job. Use rules first for exact matches so you do not spend tokens on closed vocabularies.

Hybrid pattern

Pipeline: exact rules → Jev fuzzy classify → human if low confidence or high impact. Mirror golden tickets in CI for both layers. Prove the fuzzy layer on /tools/ with anonymous runs, then automate via /api/v1/decide.
